The Energy Union's Interconnection Communication

The Energy Union's Interconnection Communication sets out the measures considered to be needed by the Commission to achieve the target of 10% electricity interconnection by 2020, which is the minimum necessary for the electricity to flow and be traded between Member States.
ENTSO-e recommendations

ENTSO-E Recommendations

To help Europe's decision-makers meet these challenges ENTSO-E has developed a series of policy recommendations. The purpose of the paper is to outline the key issues facing Europe's power system today and lay out a series of recommendations which can set the EU on the path to addressing these challenges.
European Energy Storage Mapping

European Energy Storage Mapping

This report presents the very first overview of research, development and demonstration projects on energy storage in Europe. A total of 14 countries are covered, together with activities sponsored directly by the European Commission. This mapping provides an overview by looking into the technological orientation of each project and by mapping at which level it is related to the electricity grid. This will inform further decisions on the role of storage in grid development and the interactions between both.
Assessing Storage Value in Electricity Markets

Assessing Storage Value in Electricity Markets

This report provides a summary review of current literature on energy storage with particular attention to three broad topics: (i) the methodologies used for assessing storage value as defined by the fundamental assumptions, the problem definition and the solving strategies, (ii) the current market environment for electricity storage including drivers and barriers to deployment, the impact of technology developments, and (iii) the range of possible regulatory environments which would address the current challenges of power storage.
Assessment of the European Potential for Pumped Hydropower Storage

Assessment of the European Potential for Pumped Hydropower Storage

This JRC report presents the results of the assessment for pumped hydro energy storage in Europe under certain topologies and scenarios. The results show that the theoretical potential in Europe is significant. A comparison with the existing pumped hydro energy storage facilities reported in 14 countries suggests that the Topology 1 theoretical potential is 3.5 times the existing capacity whereas the Topology 2 realisable potential is 10 times as much the existing capacity.
Cost Benefit Analysis in the Context of the Energy Infrastructure Package

Cost Benefit Analysis in the Context of the Energy Infrastructure Package

The aim of this Think project report is to support the European Commission, as well as the other concerned entities (ENTSO-E and ACER), in the development of the CBA method to be used for electricity infrastructure projects, including transmission and storage projects. Thus, this report provides recommendations on how to implement an appropriate CBA for electricity infrastructure projects.
Smart Grid projects in Europe: Lessons learned and current developments

Smart Grid projects in Europe: Lessons learned and current developments

This JRC study is the 2012 update of the inventory carried out in 2011 focusing specifically on the smart grid research, development and demonstration projects. The resulting final database is the most updated and comprehensive inventory of Smart grid and smart metering projects in Europe for 2012: it includes 281 smart grid projects and around 90 smart metering pilots and roll-outs. The interactive maps of the study can be accessed here.
Creating the Internal Energy Market in Europe

Creating the Internal Energy Market in Europe

This EWEA report aims to contribute to the debate on the completion of an Internal Energy Market (IEM) by 2014 and provide views on present electricity market integration approaches and the development of a future flexible power system with a large scale uptake of wind power. It also intends to place the current regulatory frameworks for wind power integration in the context of developing a single EU market for energy.
TYNDP 2012

Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2012

This report is part of an 8-document suite which delivers a structured, systematic and comprehensive vision for grid development in the coming 10 years in Europe. It describes significant investments in the European power, which are required to achieve European energy policy goals. The 2012 release builds on this experience and the feedback received from stakeholders in the last two years.
Electrical Energy Storage

Electrical Energy Storage

This White Paper by IEC summarises present and future market needs for electrical energy storage technologies, reviews their technological features, and finally presents recommendations for all electrical energy storage stakeholders.
EU Long-term Scenarios 2050

EU Long-term Scenarios 2050 - Tangible ways towards Climate Protection in the European Union

This study by the Fraunhofer Institute investigates concrete and realisable ways towards a European electricity sector in line with the goal of keeping global warming below 2°C. It analyses the development of the electricity sector in the EU 27, Norway and Switzerland up to the year 2050.
European Grid Study 2030-2050

European Grid Study 2030-2050

Based on Greenpeace's Energy [R]evolution scenario, this study by Energynautics investigates in more detail the strategic options for reaching high penetration levels of RES in 2050 and how to optimise the use of all the installed renewable energy sources. This new study was commissioned to investigate various operating scenarios in the year 2030 and 2050 and to develop a methodology for optimizing the use of installed renewable energy sources in simulations.
Energy Infrastructure Priorities for 2020 and beyond

Energy Infrastructure Priorities for 2020 and beyond

This EC Communication outlines a Blueprint which aims to provide the EU with a vision of what is needed for making our networks efficient.
TYNDP 2010

Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2010

This ENTSO-E report intended to deliver a valuable input for the National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs) that Member States were committed to submit in June 2010. It underlines the benefits power grid planning can derive from the Proposal of the EU-Council of a new Regulation concerning the notification to the Commission of investment projects in energy infrastructure within the European Community.
Roadmap 2050

Roadmap 2050: Practical Guide to a Prosperous, Low-Carbon Europe

The mission of Roadmap 2050 by ECF is to provide a practical, independent and objective analysis of pathways to achieve a low-carbon economy in Europe, in line with the energy security, environmental and economic goals of the European Union.
